FAITH AND DOUBTS
On a sunny Saturday afternoon, I was at a bar drinking a beer waiting for my friend Susan to come. By my side, there were two friends discussing politics. Christopher was really optimistic trying to show Jack the grounds why the country was in good shape. Jack was skeptical about the future, saying we would be doomed to despair quickly. They seemed to be longtime friends. I began paying attention to their discussion about politics though I do not like it at all. There are three themes that are very sensible - politics, religion, and football. I have already seen friendships, and marriages end because of this. Of course, we must develop ideas and take some positions but it has to be personal and sage, averting useless discussions. Anyway, I noticed that Christopher, who was more optimistic, had the goodwill to show Jack his points of view, with staggering reasoning. His arguments were by far connected and his logic was understandable. But it seemed that the other guy did not want to see or understand. Complaining all the time, he said people were scammed, and that all politicians were insidious and things like that. Then the following dialog between them kept my whole attention and I got astonished:
Christopher said: Do not
worry. Everything is going to be all right
Jack then, asked: When?
Christopher said: WHEN YOUR FAITH IS BIGGER THAN YOUR DOUBTS!!!
“WOW!!!
WHAT A LEFT JAB!!! A KNOCKOUT DEFINITELY.” I thought to myself. End of
discussion. In fact, this chat changed my life. Waiting for Susan had been
worthwhile as I had earned a valuable lesson. How many times in life, had I
caught myself being like Jack? Worse, what did I do about this? How many times
did I leave my faith, turn down by facts or other people? How many times, did I
get to doubt things that had no worth? Meanwhile, Susan came, and at once I
told her what had happened and what I had learned. We both chatted about this
for a long time and it was productive as we were not devising faith but putting
it into practice.
